These juicy morsels of dry cured meat are a nutrient powerhouse and a perfect snack for little hands like my Bowie’s! At almost 18 months old and breastfeeding, her natural iron stores have dropped and can be best topped up with iron rich foods. Biltong and biersticks are my go to snack and tick all the boxes. They boost her iron, help with teething, great for on-the-go and are full of flavour. It also helps that she loves them!
Traditionally a South African specialty and if you’re to believe folklore, Biltong was born when fresh strips of meat were placed under a riders saddle where the heat, sweat and weight of a few days riding would season and dry the meat. Not exactly appetising but back in the 21st century the meat is hung and dried in special drying houses. The folk at Canterbury Biltong use a minimum of 235g of meat for every 100g of Biltong — that’s a substantial amount of protein and iron!
